A Weekend in Chicago: With Kids

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.”

Anita Desai

Chicago is one of our all-time favorite getaways close to home!

Not too long ago, my husband booked a solo trip for me for a whole week to Chicago and ever since I’ve been back, I’ve been itching to visit again soon.

This time, I really wanted to bring the kids and let them explore all that the beautiful Windy City has to offer. The last time we went to Chicago as a family was when our 6 year old was just a little one. So it had been a loooong time since we’ve traveled to Chicago with kids. While planning out our days, I wanted to be sure to find things that would entertain all of us. Our children are 2, 6, 8 and 14 so finding something we could all enjoy together was key.

While there are obviously many more family-friendly things to do in Chicago, these are the ones we chose that could fit into our weekend stay…

Maggie Daley Park

Maggie Daley Park is every child’s dream park. They have an expansive play garden with several little separate areas of play tucked around every nook. They also have mini-golf, a climbing wall, and a bungee jumping trampoline. You can also either bring your own or rent scooters, rollerblades, and roller skates at the fieldhouse facility to ride around the outdoor rink.

This was back in 2017 when we visited Maggie Daley Park! It’s really the best park in all of Chicago, in my opinion.

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is a fun-filled adventure hub for everyone and is also home to one of Chicago’s most iconic attractions: the magnificent Centennial Wheel.

Centennial Wheel is a MUST! You can find some of the best views of the city, the downtown Chicago skyline, and Lake Michigan on the wheel. We really enjoyed the relaxing ride and gorgeous views!

The kids all wanted to ride a few rides, so after that we went inside to check out all the small shops and look for a place to grab lunch. There are a variety of restaurants to choose from and even a McDonald’s inside the the People’s Pier.

  • Every weekend, Navy Pier offers live music, fireworks, and more.
  • There are also many different cruises you can go on for panoramic views of the Windy City!

Water Tower Place

Both American Girl Place & the Lego Store are located inside of the Water Tower Place and is really a great one stop shop for everyone’s wants/needs.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Lincoln Park Zoo is FREE and home to hundreds of animals from around the world. Since they opened their doors in 1868, the zoo has grown and evolved to become the only privately managed, free zoo in the entire country.

Did You Know? The Lincoln Park Zoo is the 4th oldest zoo in North America!

Lake Michigan “Beach”

You probably don’t think of Chicago as being a beach destination, but you can still soak in those sweet summer vibes and beachy feels along the waters of Lake Michigan.

Here’s a quick list of the Top 9 Beaches in Chicago according to Lonely Planet:

  • North Avenue Beach
  • 57th Street Beach
  • Montrose Beach
  • Ohio Street Beach
  • Oak Street Beach
  • 63rd Street Beach
  • 31st Street Beach
  • 12th Street Beach
  • Rainbow Beach

While the water is usually cold, there are 26 official strands of sand throughout the city. Something worth noting, swimming is only allowed when lifeguards are on duty (Memorial Day through Labor Day).

While we didn’t bring any towels or our swim suits, the kids had a great time putting their toes in the water and playing in the sand… plus, just look at that view!!
